// 4:24 PM Dearest 郭生 今天我要谈您戏中的小朋友。 给郭宝崑的一封信(3) - 文珺
// 4:22 PM 给郭宝崑先生的第三封信敬爱的郭宝崑先生: 这已经是第三次给您写信了。在这些日子里,逐渐对您的剧本有了进一步的了解。这次,我想跟您聊聊在《灵戏》中的人物——姑娘。 首先她也是一个悲剧人物,在战争中丧失了自己的肉体,心灵和生命。在她的中学时代,由于一个爱慕她的人,决定放下儿女私情,投身到保卫祖国的事业当中的男生的触动,也跟随参军。剧中没有明确的写姑娘有没有和这个初中同学恋爱。但是心里青春的种子肯定深深被这个男孩触动,情感的寄托也在这个男孩身上。所以当他参军时,姑娘也义无反顾的尾随。 在小兵要求姑娘和几个护士出诊帮忙时,由于姑娘的善良,反而导致了后面的悲剧。这样我们感叹,在现在的社会当中,有多少人是利用别人的单纯,友好而去欺骗,伤害对方。而这种伤害,欺骗对于受害者本身来说在以后的日子里有多大的影响,这个也是无法估计的。 在姑娘告诉上司,寻求帮助的时候,上司的决定再一次是“牺牲小我,完成大我”的思想。完全站在军人或者这几个犯罪的小兵的立场上,为她们辩解,开脱。完全不考虑女性的感受。然而姑娘的决定更是让人惊讶,居然主动当起了士兵们的泄欲工具。说明她没有太多自己的主见,委曲求全,具有很强的牺牲精神的女人。可是,这种做法明明是错误的,但是在“战争”的掩护下,在“保家卫国”的掩护下,这些勾当,赤裸裸的展现在大家面前。光明正大的进行,可想而知,那些士兵更不知道错,更有胆量继续胡作非为,更没意识到尊重女性!无疑之间,助长了兵营中的不良气氛,也削弱了他们战斗的信念和力量。同时,加速了战争的灭亡。 当姑娘在最后的说到“没有温暖,没有温存,没有情,没有爱,只有消耗,不是人的消耗”说明,在她们投身到保卫国家的行列当中,是充分相信组织的领导和能力,把组织当成一个大家庭,把每一个人当成自己的兄弟姐妹,可是,最后,战争没有击垮她,反而是这些她最相信的人,剥夺了她所有的温暖和爱,而自己和那些姐妹们,只感觉在士兵眼里,是一个工具,消耗的工具。 文珺 22、11、11 给郭宝崑的一封信(3) - Cat
// 4:20 PM 亲爱得宝崑叔叔, 还是我!您好吗? 今天想跟你聊聊‘文化’这个题目。您在好几个剧本里都有提到‘追随文化’,‘现代化掩盖文化’和‘文化孤儿’这几跟文化有关的名次。新加坡人真的是文化孤儿吗? Many youngsters these days do not know where their ancestors are from and they seem ok with it. Is it true that our roots, culture & heritage had been uprooted from us as modernization took over our lives? Many people always said “我们的文化” but what exactly is “我们的文化”? That brings us to “文化孤儿”. You have mentioned that “…这个国家、这个民族普遍具有文化孤儿的心态:一种失离感,一种追索自我的焦虑。去访查祖先的文化国度,我们可以得到某种抚慰,但是总无 法认同那就是自己的文化家园。我们长期处于一种漂泊寻觅的心境中。有人把这称作边缘人意识.” Whenever I think of this, I felt lonely. Where is my root, my heritage? Are they important to me this a society like this? Our government somehow gave us a answer many years back when dialect was uprooted from our languages. As much as I wanted to find my roots, my heritage, I’m kind of helpless and felt very “边缘人”. And I think this “边缘人意识” will pass down to the next generation. Good luck to them! 惠敏字 给郭宝崑的一封信(3) - 勇安

// 4:04 PM Mr. Kuo, On Truth and Existence You reminded me of the words of Joseph Brodsky, who describes art as the oxygen that might arrive when the last breath has been expended:
I see this in The Spirits Play (1998). The collective lack of resolution of that war and the relationships that linked the spirits to the war has left them in a limbo state afterlife, condemned to remember and to recreate the truth, the omniscient truth through the unfolding of each character’s flawed memories and recollection of events. Drawing on its allegorical references to World War II, the work depicted the Japanese as victims without taking a categorical position to condemn them for their conduct in the war and as a result, many Singaporean and regional audience were left disappointed and upset. But doesn’t this distinctively remind us of how we have been conditioned to self-perpetuate aggression towards the ‘oppressors’ – the Japanese as a collective whole? The descendants of the ‘oppressed’ were told that any attempts to protect, defend or even to justify the Japanese’s actions are deemed to be unpatriotic. And yet, the concept of the open society is based on the recognition that nobody is in possession of the ultimate truth. If we fail to recognize that we may be wrong, we can only undermine any action done in the world. Living in a world that fragments, that re-engineers and one that homogenizes culture, we cannot just wait for someone else (be it an authority or an individual) to define our life and our existence. One can only create meaning by forging it with one’s own hands. This process requires sweat and commitment. Working towards the creation of meaning is the point. It is the action that forges the meaning and significance of life. You taught me these in The Spirits Play – a theatrical piece that is more about a question than an answer. I find it poignant that I am able to draw parallels between The Spirits Play and Singapore. In a culture where hopes are synonymous with self-centered satisfaction, “could we still go home?” Where is our home? Has capitalism corroded our soul? And is this not a fate worse than the destruction of the body – to lose our soul and to live an empty existence? As the spirits in The Spirits Play continue to descend deeper into darkness and have practically no hope of seeing the dawn of life, are we not the same too?

// 3:40 PM Dear Mr Kuo, The pineapple is a herbaceous perennial which grows to 1.0 to 1.5 meters (3.3 to 4.9 ft) tall, although sometimes it can be taller. In appearance, the plant itself has a short, stocky stem with tough, waxy leaves. When creating its fruit, it usually produces up to 200 flowers, although some large-fruited cultivars can exceed this. Once it flowers, the individual fruits of the flowers join together to create what is commonly referred to as a pineapple. After the first fruit is produced, side shoots (called 'suckers' by commercial growers) are produced in the leaf axils of the main stem. These may be removed for propagation, or left to produce additional fruits on the original plant. Commercially, suckers that appear around the base are cultivated. It has 30 or more long, narrow, fleshy, trough-shaped leaves with sharp spines along the margins that are 30 to 100 centimeters (1.0 to 3.3 ft) long, surrounding a thick stem. In the first year of growth the axis lengthens and thickens, bearing numerous leaves in close spirals. After 12 to 20 months the stem grows into a spike-like inflorescence up to 15 cm long with over 100 spirally arranged, trimerous flowers, each subtended by a bract. Flower colors vary, depending on variety, from lavender, through light purple to red. And then the pineapples are plucked, cut, cubed and sent on the processing belt. Shoved into cans. Branded, labeled, boxed. And then no one remembers. No one remembers what pineapples are, how did pineapples come to look like the way they are. What is a pineapple? Is it a herbaceous perennial which grows to 1.0 to 1.5 meters tall? Or bright yellow rings nestled in sugar syrup? Are we the former? Or the latter?
